Description
"Tragedy at Sea - Sydney to Hobart",a seascape/sailing painting by VIVA Anderson, is/was,my tribute to the race that broke our hearts. Boxing Day, 1998.
The 1998 Sydney-to-Hobart was the deadliest in Australian sailing history.
A severe low pressure front hit the majority of the fleet as it sailed down
the New South Wales coast towards the Bass Strait, bringing winds up to
70 knots and waves as big as 20 metres.
Of the 115 starters, only 44 boats made it to Hobart, with 66 yachts forced to retire, five lost at sea and six sailors drowned. RIP my kindred spirits. I honour you.
More than 40 people were rescued in daring helicopter lifts in boiling seas, with others saved by Navy ships and fishing boats.
Mark Twain:
'Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do.
So, throw off the bowlines.
Sail away from the safe harbor.
Catch the trade winds in your sails.
Explore.
Dream.
Discover.'
This is a refreshed upload of my painting, and I quote just two of many treasured
comments posted in 2013,when first uploaded so long ago now...but remembered.
The art came from deep within my sorry heart about this terrible moment.
''Like a fisherman....I know the lurking perils of the sea...I have seen the lethal wrath of its raging storms....but I have never found these dangers sufficient reason to remain ashore....clouds come floating into my life....no longer to carry rain or usher storm....they come to add color to my beloved sunset sky....vf...Omar Hafidi'', with my thanks, again to you, Omar.
Thank you again, Michael Creese....."I like the rich color used in this abstract. V!"

Hi VIVA~~A 'sea of emotion' wrapped up in this splendid piece of expressionistic painted abstract fine art! It was a horrible tragedy and you have paid tribute to those who perished & the yachts lost by representing the entire catastrophe superbly with this very dramatic and powerful art piece & description!! F&L!!
VIVA Anderson replied:

Dear VIVA, revisiting one of my MANY favs…this refreshed version fairly POPS with the emotion of tragedy. And now you KNOW why I was so honored that you are moderating the ESSENCE thread in The Artist BUZzz…no one consistently SEEs with the depth of design and range of emotion that you do, my friend. As always, …BRAVA, VIVA!
VIVA Anderson replied:
Thank you, especially, Laurel! B/C I KNOW your heart, trust your encouragement, appreciate you! That grief expressed here, doesn’t dissipate. My heart still churns about comrades lost to Nature’s fury! It took all of 20 minutes to paint! Such was my powerful need, to cry out, my way, in paint! TYSVM, 🙏VIVA
